Toastmasters Youth Communication Camp 2017

Young and energetic teenagers started filling the Kuching Civic Centre with laughter and loud chatter from as early as 6.00am while waiting for their respective buses to depart for Kem Juara PLKN, Serian. “The Campers” as we call them were accompanied by their teachers and facilitators.

Toastmasters Youth Communication Camp had reached their 6th year since their humble beginning in 2011. Organised by Kuching Toastmasters Club and Toastmasters International, the Camp emphasises on English communication development among participants consisting Secondary 3 to Secondary 6 students. However, for this year’s Camp, all students were from Secondary 4 (16 years old). CMS has been a proud sponsor of this Camp since 2012 and the club itself for many years.

A total 160 students from 23 schools, 10 teachers and 78 facilitators participated dynamically over the 3-day course and among them were our very own CMS employees who volunteered as facilitators namely myself, Victoria, Firdausi, Khairul, Bryan, Hadiq, Deejay, Dayangku, Jacquelyn and Nurin.

The Camp commenced with group formation, speech writing, presentation and delivery guided by Uncle Mike, the Camp Principle. Later that evening, we had ‘Ayam Pansuh’ for dinner in the jungle. It was exciting! The second day was exhilarating as all of us got to experience the obstacle courses and flying fox! At night, the students presented us with their well-thought performances during the Oscar Night. We were blown away by their talent as some of them sang, dance, act and even beat-boxing like a true professional. During the third and last day, selected students took part in the prepared and impromptu speech competition. Once again, we were amazed by their ability to speak and deliver their speeches very well despite the fact that they had limited time to practice.

Overall, the Camp was a success. Both students and facilitators learned a lot and had an enjoyable weekend. Some of us are even thinking of going back for next year’s Camp. It was well-organised, educational and most of all fun-filled.
